What Is a Random Letter Picker For?

A random letter is the starting point for dozens of games and exercises. Spin the wheel once and you get a letter from A to Z with no bias toward the ones people say out loud most often, like S, T, or M.

Categories and Scattergories. Pick a letter, then race to name an animal, a city, and a food that all start with it.

Classroom warm-ups. Ask students for a word, a verb, or a character from a book that begins with the letter on the wheel.

Writing and improv prompts. Use the letter as the first letter of a sentence, a story title, or a made-up name.

Playing Without Repeats

In a longer game you may not want the same letter twice. Note each result on paper as it comes up, or press Customize this wheel to open the builder with the alphabet pre-filled and switch on “Don’t repeat winners”. Each letter then leaves the wheel after it is picked.

Need a number rather than a letter? The Number Generator Wheel works the same way.

Why a Wheel Instead of Just Picking?

People are bad at being random. We avoid letters that feel awkward, like Q or X, and favour the ones that are easy to think of. A spinning wheel has no such habits, so every letter gets its turn and the game stays fair for everyone at the table.
